What is a Chicken Run?

For those unfamiliar with the term Chicken Run, it is a One Day Event especially scaled down to offer competitors a gentle introduction to eventing. Our events are open to all ages - past competitors have ranged from 4 (on a leading rein) to over 70 (although at this point we didn't ask their exact age!). The competition has the usual dressage, showjumping and cross-country components.  However, there are some important differences from official One Day Events:

For all Chicken Runs you will need to fill in an Entry Form and Disclaimer

Chicken Run Rules

Official One Day Event Rules

Dressage

Callers are permitted for the 45cm classes.

Callers are not permitted.

If you accidentally leave the arena the judge will pretend not to notice.

Leaving the arena during the test incurs elimination.

'Chicken Run' judges are selected for their sense of humour and compassion, not their maths.

The fourth error of course or test incurs elimination.

Cross Country

No time limit - but try to be back in time for the prize giving.

Exceeding optimum time is penalised.
Double optimum time -
elimination.

A "bird of pray" flutters around at each obstacle. Such birds have been specially chosen for their liberal interpretation of course errors and their eagerness to offer assistance in times of need.

Every obstacle has a "bird of prey" perched beside it for the sole purpose of recording every tiny nit-picking mistake. Outside assistance incurs elimination.

Chicken Run cross country fences can usually be stepped or scrambled over or otherwise got around.

Cross country fences are too big and solid to step over but are sometimes scrambled or fallen over. Occasionally they are approached on a wing and a prayer!

Chicken Runs are supposed to be fun.

So is serious eventing...
